On this day in 1944, the 1st Marine Division launches an assault on the southwest coast of Peleliu. They sustained heavy casualties in fighting their way ashore and later withstand a Japanese tank-led counterattack.
It would be the bitterest battle of the war for the Marines.
In this video, which is showcased in our Battle of Peleliu exhibit, PFC Eugene Sledge of Mortar Team, K Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division shares his personal account of what it was like to survive on Peleliu.
Sledge survived heavy fighting unscathed but became haunted by his memories. Years later he would write about his experience in "With the Old Breed," a book widely hailed as the definitive enlisted man's account of combat in World War II.
